Montecito Rising – Bucket Brigade 1st Anniversary Party
January 12, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 11:30 pm
In the early morning of January 9, 2018, the unimaginable happened: a record rain event hammered the Santa Ynez Mountain range above Santa Barbara, California and brought the mountain down on the little town of Montecito. Millions of tons of mud, boulders, and trees came crashing down, overwhelming creeks, crushing bridges, and sweeping beloved friends and neighbors away. The disaster caused 23 fatalities and over 150 injuries. More than 100 homes were destroyed and an additional 300 homes were damaged.
The Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade was quickly formed by five friends who immediately saw the need to organize and deploy a volunteer response to the tragic debris flow. Along with a dedicated team of local leaders, the Bucket Brigade led more than 3,000 volunteers into damaged areas, helping those directly affected by the debris flow – digging mud and debris out of homes, helping families find lost belongings, cleaning up public open spaces, helping to restore local trails and rescuing endangered oak trees.
January 9, 2018 – The mountain came down on us
January 10, 2018 – Love, compassion, and solidarity brought the whole community together – and, united, we
rose up to face this crisis
January 12, 2019 – We commemorate this anniversary, celebrate our community spirit, and prepare to meet
whatever challenges the future may bring
We hope you will join us for our first anniversary event. All proceeds will benefit the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade. Funds raised will support our ongoing work in response to the January 2018 disaster in Montecito, and help us prepare for fires and debris flows in 2019 and beyond. Funds will also support the development and deployment of the Bucket Brigade’s Community Self-Rescue System, allowing other communities to use our model to more effectively prepare for — and respond to — disasters and community crises through volunteer training, coordination and deployment. All donations to the Santa Barbara Bucket brigade are tax-deductible as allowed by law 501(c)(3).
